The New Hampshire Atlas and Gazetteer
Published in Paperback by DeLorme Publishing (December, 1988)
Authors: David Delorme, Delorme Publishing Company, and David Delorme and Company
Average review score:

excellent, extremely detailed map of local roads
This atlas is fabulous for driving around the back roads of New Hampshire. It has the names and route numbers of every single road in the entire state, even dirt roads, even indicates which is which. It is not very helpful for roads in cities or large towns, showing only the main ones. But in addition to that it lists canoe trips, state parks, every single private campground in the state, tons of hiking trails (in detail), national forests, snowmobile trails, downhill and cross-country skiing centers, some biking trails, fishing spots (in great detail), museums, historic sites, natural features, the arts, golf courses, covered bridges. Absolutely essential for exploring New Hampshire.

It is an indispensible guide that I take with me on my many hikes each year. It makes identifing which rabid animal is about to maul me very easy.

New Hampshire: A Living Landscape

Authors: Peter E. Randall and Stephen H. Taylor

Panoramic photographer captures spirit of local scene
Peter Randall is a New Hampshire native whose gift for capturing his local surroundings on film are only enhanced by his use of a panoramic camera. Using a special camera which records onto a 2.5 by 6.5 inch film, the author has collected images of the local scene which stop the casual browser and command close reading of the details within his compositions of farm, forest, and ordinary town scenes. This is a book to spend a quiet evening examining and exploring what someone with love of place and skill with camera can do

Author: Peter E. Lynch
Average review score:

Best of the best
For those interested in Railroads in general, and the New Haven Railroad in particular, you would be well advised to grab a copy of this book. As a 46 year veteran of the NH,PC,Conrail & Amtrak progression, I found it to be very accurate, concise & mostly very interesting reading, bringing the whole history of the New Haven in easily followed chapters (couldn't put it down once I started reading it). Also, there are many excellent photo's. I strongly recommend this book.

New Year in Cuba: Mary Gardner Lowell's Travel Diary, 1831-1832 (New England Diary Series)
Published in Paperback by Northeastern University Press (May, 2003)
Authors: Mary Gardner Lowell, Karen Robert, and Laurel Thatcher Ulrich
Average review score:

Rare document, wonderful writer
I first read this journal in its original format: a handwritten, early-19th-century document now kept in the archives at the Massachusetts Historical Society. I loved it on the first reading--Lowell is an articulate, insightful writer who recorded this journey for her friends and family back home in Boston. (Just as we take snapshots of a trip, 19th-century travelers wrote journals.) Now we can all read it without making a trip to the research library in Boston.

A well-educated, well-read woman, Lowell drew on a wealth of knowledge and considerable skill as a writer, but she was also somewhat more irreverent than she should have been, according to the conventions of the time. She took note of the local gossip, the scandalous histories of some of her hosts, and the harsh treatment of slaves on the sugar plantations. It makes for an engrossing read.

Professor Robert's introduction provides the historical context for the journal, covering the Boston background as well as the Cuban information.

New York & New Jersey Festivals & Events 2002 Calendar
Published in Calendar by Krafton Publishing (16 July, 2001)
Authors: Winn Krafton, Amanda Wray, and Illustrated by Wray Amanda
Average review score:

I love it!
Received this as a gift and it is wonderful! Keeps the standard format, but takes it to a next level graphically. Lots of events, festivals and street fairs presented in a wonderful and colorful layout: pretty practical with the event, city and phone # right there. Seems to be enough events listed if you live upstate, in NYC (where we do) or even NJ. Most calendars just use black lines to create the date boxes. Not this one - the format feels larger than the typical format with four-color graphis it's charming and colorful and I love the little graphic items that match the month. The photos are very attractive, fun and match the seasons perfectly (December photo is only *** the rest we really like). The paper really is easy to write on. They used a terrific graphic artist that appears to have had fun with it. If you're looking for a calendar that everyone in the family will enjoy - I'd recommend this one.

Magnificent beauty
There are a great many scenic vistas in New York state that visitors to the more populated areas never see. Hardie Truesdale has managed to capture 12 of these in all their beauty--the sparkling waterways, the lush forests, and the amazing mountainscapes of the Catskills and Adirondacks. And for anyone wishing to actually use this as a calendar, there is plenty of space for writing appointments, etc. If you love New York, nature, or outdoor photography, this calendar is a must have.

An enchanting peek into the lives of Thrush Green villagers.
All of Miss Read's books are enchanting and this one is no exception. I only wish that her Thrush Green books and Fairacre books would be republished as sets so I could read them all again and this time in chronological order.
